Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is set to pay an official visit to the United States next month, September, to attend the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, where he is expected to hold a series of high-level diplomatic engagements and address the General Assembly.

According to diplomatic and political sources, the Prime Minister is scheduled to arrive in New York on September 21 for the high-level segment of the UN General Assembly, which begins on September 22. During his stay, he is expected to meet world leaders, senior UN officials and representatives of international organizations on the sidelines of the annual gathering.

The Prime Minister is tentatively scheduled to deliver Bangladesh’s national statement before the General Assembly on September 24, highlighting the country’s priorities on global peace, sustainable development, climate resilience, economic cooperation and multilateral engagement.

This year’s UNGA carries special significance for Bangladesh, as Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman has been elected President of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly, becoming only the second Bangladeshi to hold the prestigious position after Humayun Rasheed Chowdhury in 1986-87. Dr. Khalilur Rahman secured the presidency with 99 votes in a closely contested election held at the UN Headquarters in June.

Diplomatic sources said Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s address before the General Assembly under the presidency of a fellow Bangladeshi represents a landmark moment in the country’s diplomatic history and reflects Bangladesh’s growing stature in multilateral diplomacy.

Following his official engagements at the United Nations, the Prime Minister is expected to attend a civic reception hosted by expatriate Bangladeshis in New York on September 25.

The visit is also expected to include a California leg, with the Prime Minister likely to travel to San Francisco from September 26 to 28. Preparations are reportedly underway among the Bangladeshi diaspora in the Bay Area for community events and interactions focusing on technology, innovation, investment and diaspora engagement.

Leaders of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and expatriate community organizations in California said they are making extensive preparations to welcome the Prime Minister. They believe the visit will strengthen ties with overseas Bangladeshis while promoting investment opportunities and greater collaboration between Bangladesh and technology professionals based in Silicon Valley.

California BNP President Badrul Alam Chowdhury Shiplu said party leaders and activists are enthusiastic about the Prime Minister’s visit and are working to ensure the success of the planned events. He expressed hope that the tour would further strengthen Bangladesh’s economy by encouraging investment and expanding engagement with the global Bangladeshi community.

Officials familiar with the preparations said the Prime Minister’s US tour is expected to last eight to ten days, although the final itinerary remains subject to diplomatic scheduling and protocol arrangements.
